After sticking a couple of dirty cups into the dishwasher — which, unbeknown to me, contained clean dishes from a cleaning cycle initiated by my wife the night before — I had to find a “dishwasher alert” indicator. I thought this would be as easy as going down to my local hardware store and picking one up.
NOT. After wandering around two big-box home improvement retailers and two smaller hardware stores, I experienced an “ah-ha” moment and searched Amazon.com. I purchased this alert and one other to see which ones I’d like.
I like this one. My dishwasher doesn’t have a metal front so having an adhesive backing was somewhat important but not a deal killer as I have rolls of 3M-type double-sided tape around. I like this item because it’s large enough to be visible and pretty straightforward to see and use– slide it to the left to show the “DIRTY” indicator (after I empty the dishwasher); slide it to the right to show “CLEAN” (before I start the dishwasher).
The other indicator? Nothing particularly wrong with it other than this one won out in terms of usage. I’ll give the other one away.

I really enjoy using this dishwasher alert sign. I have a black dishwasher and this is perfect since magnets don’t work on my dishwasher. I bought one for my mother also and she likes it better than the magnetic dishwasher signs.

I am so happy I bought this dishwasher sign. With 2 roommates and my hubby and myself it was hard to know when the dishes in the dishwasher were clean or dirty and since using this we now know!

Got two of these because I have Dishwasher drawers. They work great and make it clear which drawer to load. I highly recommend these for anyone who has ever started to load a dirty dish into a load of “clean” dishes.
I no longer have to speak up as I hear my husband getting ready to put a dirty dish into the dishwasher. Whew!!!

This is the best of all the options for the dishwasher “Are these dishes clean?” dilemma.
– It has double-sided tape instead of a magnet so it will stick to your stainless steel dishwasher just fine.
– It stays firmly set to “clean” or “dirty” … no accidental changes every time you open the door.
– It’s fairly thin, less than 1/2″ so mine is actually installed on TOP of the door between the edge of the door and the countertop. This way it’s not ugly and obtrusive on my pretty stainless dishwasher
