Question by jpbischke: How to hook up a fax and dsl modem to the same phone jack?
I think this should be pretty easy but can’t figure it out. In my living room I have one phone jack and I want to connect both a fax machine and my DSL modem to it. I bought a splitter for the phone jack and while this handles the DSL model fine I can’t get a dial tone on other jack of the splitter for the fax machine to use to send/receive. Any ideas as to what I can try here?

You will need a splitter…..or some people call it a microfilter…..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DSL_filter
This should allow you to connect two devices to the same phone jack…..

you have ONE phone jack.
The splitter you got may be the type that tries to separates two phone line on one plug to two polugs of one phone line (there are space for multiple lines in a socket)
you need a splitter that will give you twice the same phone line like you wanted to plug a phone and a fax on one line.
On the side which will receive the fax, put the dsl filter in line.
Last time SBC gave me modem, they gave me a special splitter that has a filter in it, and the phone/fax and dsl sides are clearly labelled.
you can find the right splitter at home depot, radio shack or fry’s.
at home depot you can also get a small line tester that costs about .50 and will light green if everything is good and red if the line is reversed (and not light it the line is not connected)

you need a splitter (should have came with your DSL packace) or can be had at any hardware, or 99 cent store… plug the DSL modem directly into the splitter, and plug a filter into the other end of the splitter, then plug the fax into the other line…
MOST FAX MACH WILL NOT GIVE YOU DIAL TONE UNLESS THEY ARE PLUGGED INTO ELECTRICAL POWER….
