We purchased this refrigerator in anticipation of a remodel about 18 months ago. We put it into service about a year ago, but we only recently started using the ice maker. It is so pathetic…doesn’t produce enough ice for two people to have drinks twice a day. And it’s been that way since day one! My old refrigerator that I purchased for 1200 over 16 years ago outdid this thing by a landslide. The refrigerator itself is okay – nothing glowing about a refrigerator as one either keeps stuff cold or it doesn’t. But for $2000+ dollars, I expect all the bells and whistles to work.

    Summary…look elsewhere for the money.

When our 6-yr-old Frigidaire side-by-side needed emergency replacement, we were a little reluctant to return to the same store the previous homeowner bought the “Fridge-I-dare-ya”. But they DELIVER FAST, faster than anyone else that was open last Sunday (11/13/09). In-stock/delivery was a major factor in our selection. However, after agonizing in the store between the highly-rated new Whirlpool and Samsungs, we couldn’t be happier with our decision (delivered the next day).

We were annoyed/concerned when the filtered water was taking “minutes” to fill a cup, but it was a kink in the connecting water line that required pulling the unit back out to check for exactly that problem. (this was an installation problem, not the unit)

Like any stainless appliance, you will need to get the right cleaner for fingerprints.

Of course, we certainly hope this one lasts longer than 6 years for the money.

The only Whirlpool feature we preferred was the “lower water/ice dispenser” with separate ice and water levers. However, that was a trade-off we made for Samsung’s “adjustable” bottom-freezer-divider and dual icemakers.

Do I wish it had been less-expensive? Yes. But, features add up.

    Features we like:

    – The french door design with bottom freezer. (one friend told us not to buy it because “she has trouble finding stuff in her bottom freezer” – but she admitted ours was bigger than her “apartment-sized fridge” and did not have the same problem)

    – Stainless look (but… no fridge magnets and lots of fingerprints)

    – push-button child-locks on the water/ice dispenser.

    – “open door” alarm (young kids!!)

    – inside-door shelves that hold a gallon of milk where a 4-yr-old can get to it.

    – the fold up and slide back shelves for “tall items” that need to stand up

    – dual-icemakers with separate controls, so we can increase ice production for entertaining.

    – the adjustable divided bottom freezer. holds more than our old side-by-side freezer and easier to see/find the items.

    – our kids like the bottom “cool/fresh tray/shelf” for easy access to snacks/lunch stuff.

    – energy efficiency (but maintains temperature evenly and as expected)

    – J.D. Powers award for the brand and generally good/high-score reviews on many sites and many models.

Features we miss or preferred on other models:

    – Separate ice and water levers. you need to press a button to change between ice (crushed and cube) and water.

    – The water dispenser is lower on other brands, but.. the kids will grow. ;-)

    – The water spout does point “back” and the depth of the water/ice area is not very big. So, filling “bottles” or other large containers may be limited. (the new whirlpool has a cool new “swivel” on the water dispenser which allows for easy pot filling, and it even includes “measured fill” for specific amounts)

    – Grrr! mfr/custom water filter. Other brands seem to be migrating toward using the readily available PUR filters rather than having to buy “brand/model specific filters from Samsung”. Consumable parts should not require a dependence on the manufacturer.

    – whatever happened to appliances lasting 20+years? Apparently “new technology” and “energy efficiency” is a trade-off with “Long-lasting durability”. Hmmm… makes you wonder if more refrigerators in dumps is really better than energy efficient cooling technology?

    – “American made”? I have no idea where it was made, but the brand would suggest not domestically.

Anyway… after a couple weeks… we still LOVE it.

We bought our 26.9 cubic ft. Samsung model with ice and water in the door after Thanksgiving 2009. I had been watching for a great buy for over a year. Normal retails: $2399, but on sale for $1399 on black Friday! I read a lot about the frig, and although it had some “cons,” I still wanted it. We have now had it three months. We have 3 teenagers, and all of the friends that go with them. Or old refrigerator was a 27cubic foot Kenmore, side-by-side.

There were many complaints on line about the ice maker: We followed the directions for the ice maker and it works perfectly. It takes 24 hours, so be patient. We did not run out of ice, even over the holidays.

Pros: The refrigerator is silent. We never hear it turn on or off. It is less then 10 feet from the TV and family room and we never hear it. However; we do hear the ice maker drop ice. The ice dropping is very loud.

The French door design makes it very comfortable to see and retrieve things from the frig. And the freezer drawer is really nice for ice-cream and stuff you get to a lot.

    Cons:

Unfortunately I am very disappointed in the organization of space in the French door design. Although the cubic feet of the two refrigerators is almost the same, 26.9 vs., 27, we could not get all of the food and stuff from our old side-by-side into the new Samsung, After 3 months I still have the old frig plugged in on the back patio as a backup! We have reorganized several times, down-sized, and cleaned out the frig several times, but we still have problems. It is almost impossible to fit a crock pot on any of the shelves. And forget about a stock pot! Everything we kept on the door in the old frig we now have shoved on the top shelf. It is not as visible and easy to get to. We use the door for anything taller than a beer bottle. The cute little flip shelf is necessary because you have to keep it up all the time to fit tall items. But then you loose the shelf space it would provide! Most tall items we lay down on their side.

The compartments on the top left door are worthless, we keep 1 mustard container, 1 small coffee creamer and a bottle of ice cream topping in those spots (barely fits.)

We can fit 2, one gallon jugs of milk in the door compartments, but nothing else. In the old frig I could put two, one gallon jugs, and 4 or 5 bottles of beer, or 2 large coffee creamers with the jugs of milk. So we really lost space there. We bend the top of the half gallon containers so they can fit on the top shelf, or we just lay those types of containers on their side so they will fit. A bottle of Miller Lite won’t fit anywhere but on the door. If you lower the top shelf to make room for tall items, then the middle shelf is worthless. It is just not easy to organize and fit items in the French Door design of this frig.

I am very disappointed in the Deli drawer. It cannot hold much weight without coming off of the track. We tried 2 blocks of cheese, tortillas, lunch meat, and a pound of bacon; the blocks of cheese were too heavy. So don’t plan on putting much in it. It won’t close properly if there is too much weight. My husband is very annoyed at how often he has to put it back on the track.

The pizza box feature in the freezer is worthless unless you remove one of the freezer dividers.

We really haven’t seen any energy savings because we have the old frig plugged in as a back up. So I can’t comment on that. Maybe when our kids move out it will be adequate.

I thought I was getting an excellent frig, but I have ended up being disappointed (of course I will never tell my husband I’m disappointed!)

If you are looking at a French door, don’t do it, get the side-by-side!

I bought a Samsung fridge 6 months ago as I found it at good price at Lowes. Pretty soon I realized that one of the trays had a cracked frame so the glass was bent and in danger of breaking. I contacted Samsung and very nice people offered to help me. It has been a joke that has lasted 6 months and still is not solved. they sent me all kind of wrong parts that even didn’t belong to my fridge, I don’t know what to do with so many drawers when i clearly needed a tray. There has been all kind of excuses, from losing my phone number to saying that I had “accepted” that I got the right part, as I had signed for the package without knowing what was inside. Then the nightmare continued, I got transfered to executive customer service, and very kindly sent me another drawer that I didn’t need. They finally offered to get somebody to my home so they can figure out what part was broken and replace it. This person calls me and in 5 min he understands what is that is broken and gets the right part delivered to my home in few days. I leave a week on vacation and then i try to contact them to get it installed and Oh!, surprise, the company doesn’t work for them and it takes several calls to executive customer service for them to realize about it. They finally set me up with some other company, I have had already called twice to executive customer relations and they haven’t even scheduled that appointment yet. I’m really frustrated and feeling cheated, I have spent many many hours on the phone and luckily it wasn’t a problem that didn’t allow the fridge to work, otherwise I don’t know what i would have done for 6 months. The time that i have wasted on the phone and getting frustrated with them, is not worth the little money that I saved buying this brand of fridge.

Had this fridge for 6 months now. It’s great looking, lots of room, and might give it a 5 star except for the icemaker–it’s pretty pathetic. If you have a family of 2-3, it will probably keep up with you, otherwise you have to go out and buy extra ice. Plus the icemaker is pretty loud when it drops the ice. It has lots of nice features, but the icemaker is a negative issue —it can’t keep up.
