I suppose you could use a cheaper type of rock salt, but for the amount our Miele dishwasher uses (maybe 1 box every 2 months), I’ll stick with the Somat salt. The cleaning quality of the dishwasher is absolutely superb.

This stuff is hard to find and is required for certain MIELE dishwashers that have a hard water control option. We found out the hard way that if you pay for this option it can be hard to find the recommended salt. Amazon is a good and convenient source, but you may want to pony up for Amazon Prime as these boxes aren’t cheap to ship.

I have a 18″ Dishwasher that calls for the kind of water softner. The owner’s manual recommends Somat. I can only find it online. It comes in the mail quickly and lasts for a long time. The dishes come out great.
