Question by Chris: How do I find out if my computer has a BUILT-IN fax modem?
I have a Dell 8400 if that makes a difference and use Windows Vista Ultimate.

Best answer:

Answer by blamay22000
Simple. Look for a phone jack on the pc. If you dont have one, you dont have a dialup fax modem

Answer by Might B Lying
Right click on “My Computer”, go to Properties, Hardware, Device Manager. Verify that your modem is listed as “Morse Code (TM) Compatible”

Answer by LEC
I could be mistaken but I don’t think its the computer that has a BUILT-IN fax modem…actually I don’t think there is such a thing as a FAX modem…

My basic understanding is that the modem in the computer is bascially used to access the internet and use things like your printer. Now you can get a printer that can also do FAX’s or you can get a FAX only machine (maybe – they might not make them like that anymore)…. The FAX basically needs to have a phone line to work on and a program to run it which is done through the computer. Most new computers have a modem built in and have the jack or USB for a phone line…

You can also call Dell’s toll free number and talk to them about it or get on line with them and chat with a service person…they will know for sure.

Sorry I didn’t have a concrete answer for you…

Answer by mike y
Generically for any machine steps to take are 1-open the case and look 2-Go to Dell site in this instance and ask 3-Open control Panel and review components

Answer by GladToHelp
My only assumption would be that you’re trying to setup faxing with your computer through your fax modem? If that is the case, forget the headache, there is a much more modern and cheap way to fax:

Good Luck!

Thanks, GladToHelp

I went to Windows Fax and Scan to check but the setup wizard didn’t show up. Then I tried to send a fax through but it doesn’t seem to go through…it just keeps saying “Review Fax Status: Ready to send or receive a fax”

Answer by jordinyc
If you have WindowsXP, right-click on My Computer and select Properties, then click on the Hardware tab and then click Device Manager.

Look for “MODEMS” (between Mice and Monitors ususally).
