Posted by in Fax Free on August 15, 2011

By Yeah…right: Carfax says salvage title…… but the title is clear?
Okay so i have a question… I purchased a vehicle and the title is free and clear in my name… upon trying to trade/sell the vehicle car fax says the vehicle has a branded title… I have the title which states it is not branded….From my records.. the car was involved in a minor accident to the left fender and the fender was replaced… my question is… is it salvage or not? and how do i get car fax to remove the incorrect records?

Answer by bo
you’ll have to go to your dmv to prove it and then fax info to carfax
Answer by gotwheels3ne
Not all salvage titles are branded. It can be a salvage title with a clear title. The reason being it may have been damaged or whatever and not reported to an insurance company. Example: If you had an accident and didn’t report it to your insurance company for whatever reason. Didn’t want to have your rates raised or the person who hit you paid you in cash or settled privately then there would be a clean title. Some states like in PA allow cars to be repaired and state inspected for safety to be put back on the road. You would get a salvage title when you bought the car and a salvage branded title after it was repaired. Remember not all salvage title mean that the car was totaled. Some salvage title are given because the year of the car makes it not worth the repairs. For example I as a dealer bought a 2004 ford explorer for 750.00 and it was a salvage title. I sent it out and had it fixed by my shop. The ford need a new hood, fender, grill and paint. The total repair came to 2700.00 . A salvage is a good deal if the repairs were done right and with good parts. Any car no matter what the repairs may be can be garbage if they aren’t done right. There is a formula that insurance companies use to determine what they pay for repairs if the repairs are more than what they feel the car is worth they will write if off. Now as far as your title saying free and clear, that can also mean free and clear concerning there are no liens and it is owned by you without any encumbrances attached to it. So I would also take that into considerations but also find out from your DMV to be certain. DO NOT just take or believe what the seller said.
Answer by n
A car can be “free and clear” and be salvage. Free & clear means no money is owed on it. Doesn’t mean it was never wrecked or salvaged.
Car fax can be wrong but chances are they are right and you are wrong.
Answer by Karl Kern
Carfax may be more amenable to correcting that error than they were before they settled a Class Action suit brought because of all the erroneous info they reported.

No such thing as a “free Carfax report”, Somebody has to pay for it, and since you want the information, why don’t you pay for it yourself.
Answer by mccoyblues
Car fax reports are not free. If you NEED one, you gotta pay for it.
In the end the report costs less than your first tank of gas. The information is valuable. Everything of value costs money. Don’t be cheap, pay for the report.

Answer by bigtendude
NOPE! 24.99 to check one vehicle, or 29.99 to check many. Don’t know how much if you’re a dealer. It will show maintenence records , accident reports if it was fixed where V.I.N. # was recorded, how many previous owners, Carfax buyback guarantee, if you buy the vehicle and it turns out not to be what was included in the report, cities and states where title has been tranferred and how many times. It is a wonderful resource, but not the only one , Edmunds is another place for checking out values of vehicles over 10 years old. And I shop alot in autotrader.

Found out a car I was looking to buy has been reported stolen when checking carfax?
Posted by in Fax Free on April 7, 2011

Question by JR: Found out a car I was looking to buy has been reported stolen when checking carfax?
We typed in the VIN number at car fax on a van we were looking to buy from some some local man and it showed us for free that this van was reported stolen. They gave us a website to report him to. Were wondering if we should also contact the police within his jurisdiction as well?
Selected answer:
Answer by dick car guy
how would you feel if it was your van? I rest my case
Answer by dwayne f
I would JR.
Even if that guy was not the one that stole the car, he should have checked first like you did.
Wrong is wrong, and somewhere out there is a poor person that lost their car to this thief and he needs to pay for it now.
Answer by Nick
That could mean many things. The most likely of all is that it was stolen in the past and reported to insurance. If you are that concerned, call the police with the VIN# and plate# to see if it is reported as stolen
Answer by itybtytityluvr
I would do it in a heartbeat because if you went and unknowingly bought the van you could be arrested for receiving stolen property.
Maybe this guy doesn’t know, maybe he does but at any rate he needs to get it straightened out before he deceives someone.
Answer by overhereyoupretty
whoa a minute..you can’t from my experience get a car fax report free!..If you indeed did get the information did it list a date it was reported stolen?..an does the car fax list the most recent owner..
Give your answer to this question please!

By Gregory Klein: WHERE TO GET FREE CAR FAXS (NOT CARFAX .COM)?
hey, i’m looking at buying car and i need the car fax, i don’t want to pay to look at the car fax so I need a free website that will let me do that. no carfax. com will not let you see them free so does anyone know of any other. I’d love to know
Good Answer:
Answer by straight-shooter
No such thing. You can’t get that kind of info for free. You’re asking for someone to look through DMV, insurance company, and police records to find that info, and you want them to do it for free? Have you ever gone to work at your job and had your boss ask you not to punch in, and tell you don’t get a paycheck this week because a customer wants something else for free? Seriously, it’s not that expensive.
The other option is to have the owner of the car pay for it, if you’re really serious about buying it.
Answer by Vicky
Carfax is a registered trademark name for a company that provides (Sells) “Vehicle History reports”
There is another company that offers (sells) History Reports a little bit cheaper, but not “Free”
Even dealers have to pay for History reports by Carfax and Autocheck.
There is a lot “data” that you can collect on your own though… without spending a dime.
*******************
Free data source #1
Check the dealers website
If a reputable dealer is signed on (paid subscriptions) to Carfax or Autocheck, the dealers own website can publish the reports to potential buyers. This info is free to the buyers because the sellers have already paid for it.
NOTE!!!
If you click on a link to “view the report” from a dealer site, and it redirects you to a site that AGAIN asks you to PAY for the report, then that particular dealer is NOT a paid subscriber, BUT that dealer MAY receive a referral fee when YOU pay for the report.

Free data source #2
Ask the private owner/seller to show you the report
Private sellers often purchase a vehicle history report and can show it to potential buyers too. That should be considered the cost of doing business and the seller can absorb the fee.
(^^BEST PRACTICE for reputable sellers)

National Insurance Crime Bureau site offers up to 5 free inquiries (VINs)a day. They collect data about vehicles reported as stolen and about vehicles reported as “total loss” (due to flood, fire, accident/collision )or “salvaged” (rebuilt/reconstructed).
VINCheckSM is updated regularly as additional information is reported.

Manufacturer sites.
The original manufacturer of the vehicles often has an “Owner Resource Center” website that can give you a plethora of information ..such as; owners manuals, maintenance requirements, recall information, etc.
For example, Ford has a section where you can enter any Ford VIN and it will tell you if there are any recalls on that vehicle
( http://www.ford.com/owner-services/customer-support/recall-information )

You might be surprised at how much information you will find by “googling” a vehicle identification number (VIN). For instance, if you find the SAME vehicle is listed “for sale” at more that one “dealer”…. One of them could be a scam site that has “scraped” the other (legitimate) site and is trying to scam buyers.

(National Highway Transportation Safety Administration-office of defects investigation)
At this website consumers can look up ; recalls, technical service bulletins, consumer complaints, and defect investigations. There could be inherent problems with particular years/makes/models (vehicles).

***FINALLY
After researching the free data, you should be able to narrow down your choices of vehicles that you are seriously considering for purchase.
That would be the time for you to actually get out the checkbook and spend some of your money on an actual physical inspection of the vehicles that made it to the “short list”.
Before you purchase ANY vehicle, it would be very wise to pay a skilled/trained/certified technician/mechanic to inspect the vehicle in person.
I hope this helps.

they are not free, ask your dealer to show them to you, every honest dealer show car fax reports..
Answer by shorty
Autocheck is better than carfax, it shows alot more information than carfax. One neat trick that I have found is to type the VIN into Google, sometimes if a dealer posts the carfax or autocheck report on their website you can get it for free that way.
Answer by Scott H
It costs money to produce that information. They aren’t free. If the information is important to you, then pay for the Carfax. It could save you a lot of money and trouble.
Answer by phenom8
1. Go to ebaymotors.com
2. Copy and Paste vin number into search
3. Click on History Report
It isn’t a CAR-FAX, it’s Auto Check, however its just a s reliable and resourceful.
Good Luck.

Posted by in Fax Free on March 5, 2011

Ask by Steph: Can someone please run me a free carfax history report?
I would greatly appreciate it!
I don’t understand how a 1998 car only has 45K miles. So, hopefully that will be cleared up.
The vin is: 1G2WP1213WF215707
Or, if you just give me your car fax info, I can do it myself.
Thank You!!! =)
Selected answer:
Answer by Humveetech
I’m not sure the CarFax reports are free, usually they cost something to do the background checks.
I do know your vehicle is::
1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GT Coupe
It had 6600 miles in 1999
9600 miles in 2000
21000 in 2003
43700 in 2008
May have been someone that didn’t drive very much up til 2003, may have sold it around 2002.
I see lots of vehicles at our dealership with very low miles on them, usually from elderly people.

discrepancies in the mileage stated in classified ad, and what is true on the carfax. Flood damage, major accident. salvage title, when lied to about how many owners. Just a few…..
Answer by Stangman
carfax isn’t free, but when you’re looking at spending thousands of dollars, it is cheap! A car being wrecked doesn’t scare me off, as long as it’s not a MAJOR accident. I wouldn’t buy a car with a rebuilt or salvage title.
Answer by kelly_f_1999
well truth is you still need to check any car out before buying it your self carfax doesnt work that well some times it dont so up anything sometimes it shows up wrong info want to know how to check for signs of problems that will do you better when buying any of these links will teach you what to look for main one is open hood and check all the fluids any low dont get it look under it any wet spots dont get it check tires for uneven wear any don t get it and best drive it 30 minutes and check how it drives then recheck all you can buttons switches all the fluids and if you have any question about any part best to walk a way really best you know about the model of car and what some of their problems are
