Ask by John S.: What might be causing these fax failures after connecting to the recipient fax machine?
This is an HP Officejet 5610 All-in-One Printer/Scanner/Fax. Sometimes the fax works fine. Other times, the fax connects to the recipient and pulls the document 3 inches into the reader but then pauses for 45 seconds, as if thinking or communicating. But then it pulls the remaining page into the reader and spits it out without capturing the image, beeping with the error message “Fax Failed”.

The problem is not with the recipients as it does this with many different recipients whose fax machines are working fine and receiving faxes from other senders successfully.

HP Technical Support is horrendous to work with on this product which is only a couple months past the warranty, so they want $ 34 to fix what should be a simple problem, perhaps with just the fax settings. And there is nothing in the manual to troubleshoot this problem.

I’ve tried online Chat with HP’s Tech Support, but even with all the pop-up blockers and add-ons disabled using their browser of choice (Internet Explorer), I still cannot get their chat session to start.

Exhausting all my reasonable tech support options with HP, I have resorted to Yahoo! Answers in hope that some saavy person will be able to read this and suggest the right solution to fix this bug-a-boo which happens on some days, but not others. And I have already tried emptying the memory by unplugging all cables and restarting after 10 minutes.

You will be a HERO if you can tell me what to try to fix that will solve this fax transmission problem. It is shutting me down for hours at a time and driving me absolutely bonkers. What’s the magic solution, Boss?

Is there anything interfering with the phone call it’s self? Is there other things on your fax like such as a DSL modem, Alarm system? If you plug a phone in to the line does the dialtone/line sound clear? Is there call waiting (the beep) on the line?
