Can a switch connect to a router to further share internet connection?

Ask by Jack Townsend: Can a switch connect to a router to further share internet connection?
Hey, sorry if this has been asked a few times already (couldn’t quite get a clear answer from the other people’s questions), but…
I have a lot of stuff that connects to the internet via ethernet ports. I was wondering if a switch would be able to share the internet connection, as described below:
Internet -> Modem -> Wireless Router -> Switch -> Switch
We have 1 PC connected to the wireless router and several laptops sharing the wireless internet. From there we’d like to run a cable through the ceiling to the other side of the room so we can connect 2 printers and a fax machine. Then we’d like to further run a cable to the next room to connect a TV, computer, and two video game consoles. Can this be done by using 1 router and 2 switches or do I need to use 3 routers?
Thanks,
Jack

Yes, you can chain switches to your router to make everything work like you want. You don’t need to use routers because a router basically is only needed to connect two different networks together. That is why you need one between your Modem (Internet network) and your local network. and since everything on your local side of the router is using the same subnet (Ie. 192.168.1.x addresses)

Yes, just like you show in the diagram – you can add switches as needed…. It is easier to add switches than try to configure several routers on the same network….

your fax and copy does not need Internet, really
if you have dsl, just use the wireless
if it is dial up, you maybe looking for a splitter
there are taps that let you plug in 5 phone cords to one line [we do] and they work fine
Answer by a.way_fusion_overflow
a router? lol

An Ethernet Switch allows you to connect multiple TCP/IP devices together.
A Router connects different networks together (ie, your home network and the Internet). All home routers include an Ethernet Switch as part of the unit.

FAQ: INTERNET CONNECTION PROBLEMS PLEASE HELP!!?

Question by Mat: INTERNET CONNECTION PROBLEMS PLEASE HELP!!?
ok every time the phone rings in my house my internet looses connection to the server and says this
“The Connection Monitor has detected that your gateway is unable to establish a connection. This problem is often caused by noise on the phone line due to unfiltered telephone devices.
Check that your gateway is connected to the socket marked ADSL MODEM on the filter/splitter
Check that the socket marked WALL SOCKET on your filter/splitter is connected to your telephone wall socket.
Ensure that all other telephone devices (including phones, answering machines and faxes) that share the phone line with your ADSL service have a filter/splitter fitted between it and the wall socket
ive done everything as above but it still cuts off when the phone rings due to noise on the phone line
Ive got 6 phones in my house all using the same line
the main phone doubles as a fax machine but it DOES have a filter on it
4 more phones are codrless phones around the house and the main cordless phone does have a filter but the rest dont.
and theres and old telstra phone down stairs that DOESNT have a filter either
do i have to get filter for all 6 of my house phones so it doesnt cut off or just put it on the main phones? help pleasee…
Good Answer:
Answer by Idunno
Sounds lke your old house wiring is daisy chained though the whole house, i would either try getting another filter or just running your own cat5 or cat6 wire to your telephone box outside.
Answer by tbshmkr
Install filters on ALL telephone lines.
=
Ensure the splitter is properly installed on the telephone line sharing the ADSL modem.
=
Filters on ALL telephone lines.
– The telephone devices do not know which is the “main phone.”

Use Ethernet
Get a router and add Ethernet cards to any computers that need them. Then connect all machines to the router.
Trying to “network” machines through dial-up modems is really doing it the hard way
Answer by Kevin
Wow I tried to read that question and the typos made it difficult.
Anyhow, It appears you have a working network there and now you want to share your internet as well over it. this can be done two ways. The simplest is to purchase a router and plug your ADSL modem into the router (WAN port) then plug all the other computers on your network into the switch built into the router.
The second way is to enable ICS on your windows XP machine but you will need two network cards in that pc one to connect to the modem and the other to connect to the network switch or hub. To do this it is pretty self explainitory within the network setup wizard.
Keep in mind though using the ICS you will need to keep the host pc on anytime any of the computers want to connect to the internet and it will also be limited in speed to the weakest link in your network as well.
By far the best solution is to use a router to share the connection.
Answer by Bruce Goss
You need a router. wired or wireless depending on your setup.
Connect the incoming net to the router then each computer to the router.
While you are at it you might want to install the new gigabit network cards and cat6 cables. You can get the cards for .00 at the PC Club (on the net).
You will see an increase in speed of download and be ready for advances in technology.

yes..
but you have to use your original lossless cables
Answer by Hebrew Hammer
That modem sounds like it’s a traditional 56k modem, make sure you have a modem that works with your highspeed connection.
Answer by Matt Gerchow
You should be fine but you may want to put a wireless router at the modem location and then you can locate your pc anywhere you like. This is also a great investment for when people visit so they can use their laptops vs. getting on your computer.

Yes you do.
Answer by duckyquack2007
You don’t have to subscribe to a dial-up ISP, but you do need a phone line. Faxes are just a data transmission over a phone line. As far as I’m concerned, it’s nothing more than a regular, everyday phone call (except that a machine talks).

still recieve faxes while someone is online? phone calls? the computer is running on Vista and its a HP AMD PHENOMX4 model number a67004, the fax machine is also an HP photo smart model number C7280. thanks so much in advance. please only answer if you can help.
the fact that it can recieve faxes is WAY more important than the fact that it can get phone calls. phone calls actually dont matter at all.

Wow…this question takes me back to the 1900′s…LOL.
I “think”, this was the service that I used to use:
http://www.callwave.com/landing/internetAnsweringMachine_L1.asp
Wasn’t very cheap, however.
AFAIK, callwave also had some kind of a Fax forwarding service, but I never used it.
Good luck.

Question by Jonathan C: Does Windows Fax and Scan (on Vista) require a phone jack connection?
Is it entirely over the Internet, or does it need to be connected to a phone jack? When sending, what will appear as the sender if there is no associated phone number?
Answer:
Answer by John
It emulates a conventional fax machine. It requires a conventional ‘phone line and an analog modem.
The receiver will see whatever you’ve set for your TSID text string.
Answer by Kevin S
You will need a modem and a phone line. They will see your phone number (the one the line is on), unless you have set up a name for it, which you can.

what is the normal connection for a fax, credit card machine and phone to same phone line?
Posted by in Fax Machine on April 30, 2011
Ask by Gerald G: what is the normal connection for a fax, credit card machine and phone to same phone line?
I know how to configure the fax. I just need to know how the series should go in order to assure the CC Machine works. e.g. line from wall to fax, fax to CC machine, ccm to phone base or vice versa?
Featured answer:
Answer by Carl N
The credit card machine can go anywhere. Likewise the phone, but it all depends on what you want the fax machine to do. It should have operation instructions related to whether you want to receive faxes all the time or manually.
Answer by rossi2010
If you want to use the line for incoming voice as well as incoming faxes then you need a fax switch, this one will alow 4 different devices to share a line.
