I am working on a project with another person I have never met through the internet. I am providing them with recorded music that I will create. They have assured me that the songs I am recording are in the public domain but I want to be sure that if any copyright issues do develop, they will be solely responsible for dealing with them and I am not liable. They have agreed to sign off on this but my question is how do I create such a document?
Is a type word document that I send them and have them type their name on work as an electronic signature?
Should I have them print it, sign it, and either fax, mail, or scan and send it to me?
Any advice? (Especially from lawyers?)

Legally it’s difficult to prove they signed the document because all they’re required to say is that it weren’t them and someone forged a signature. If you must do it over a long distance you should get someone you trust at least to be present and sign the document as a witness.

You have raised a good question, and I’m glad you inquired before taking such a step. There is legislation in place that recognizes an electronic signature to be equivalent to that of a hand written signature; two important pieces of legislation to focus on are UETA and ESIGN. UETA is a state by state law, where ESIGN is the Federal law. The intent of the acts state that a contract or document “may not be denied legal effect, validity, or enforceability solely because it is in electronic form” and the definition of an electronic signature is “an electronic sound, symbol, or process attached to or logically associated with a record and executed or adopted by a person with the intent to sign the record”.
This being said, there are best practices to be considered before trying to have documents signed electronically, and many variables that would help in establishing the legal validity and integrity of the document. There are well established companies out there that provide electronic signature solutions that can help you to execute this agreement electronically, while maintaining the legal admissibility and enforceability of the document. If this is a one time event, it may be best to go through the email, sign, scan, fax process; however tedious it may be. If you believe you will have more of a regular or consistent need to have documents signed, then it could be valuable for you to look into the e-signing process.

I would like to add an online job application to my website. Currently all I have on the site is a downloadable application which prospective employees have to download, print, fill out and either scan/email or fax to the office. I would like to streamline this process by having it filled out directly on the site. What would be the best way to get my standard application transferred into a digital format? Thank you!

You have to create the application in a form format in html, have a script that will send you the results.
http://mindpalette.com has a good php script for this and a good tutorial but there are others out there.
If you are taking sensitive info, like a social security number, and address, there are additional steps you must take.
You must first make sure the form is secure via email – you will need to make sure the email is sent to you encrypted, via PGP. THen you would decrypt the email when you receive it.

You could also opt not to take personal info but then that would defeat your purpose.

Look at others. If it is business related look at Forbes, Venture, Entrepreneur magazines and the like. For newspapers, check out examples in the Wall Stree Journal, USA Today, etc. I have found that media sources let you know what format they want (how many words, if a photo is allowed, and how to submit) if you request. Most often these days you can expect you can submit anything electronically (Fax or email).

i bought a fax machine for my home to use for personal reasons. once i finish putting it together,i i was asked to put in my fax number along with house number and name. it doesn’t say anything about me creating one them giving one. what should i do?

The house number is also your faxnumber. You CAN get a number from the telephone company which you use only for the fax.

you just cant install and start using fax …you have to call your telephone company they will activate the fax service and can be used on the same number you already have or may be they will give you a new number ..first contact the phone company …

Did you connect it to your telephone line?
The telephone line number you use is also your fax number. Input that number to your fax machine so that it can print out that number at the receiving end when you send a fax. You may also leave those information blank.

No, you need to contact your phone company, you basically need a new, dedicated phone line, one you will have to pay for. Contact your landline provider, they will be able to help you get started.
