Question by Linda R: how do I connect my fax to my computer line so I can eliminate the fax line.?
I currently have 2 phone lines. Before I got DSL, my computer and fax shared a line, and the second line was for my phones. Now that DSL is on the same line as my phones, is there a way to switch the fax on and off and use the same line, thereby allowing me to eliminate the cost of the second phone line?

Sounds ike a question for your DSL provider. My initial answer would be no.

It depends on your fax machine.
I have a brother 2820 which shares my dsl line and whenever I get a fax I punch in a 3 digit code on my phone and the fax picks up.
You can also just manually walk to the fax and press “receive” (or start, or whatever button your model has) to manually start the receive process.
Don’t forget to put a DSL filter on the fax.

if you are using a desktop computer, your fax modem has a alt line that you should connect your fax machine to that and it doesn’t differ that you’re using fax or telephone and doesn’t need any switch it switches automaticaly.

You can eliminate the cost of your second phone line by sending faxes via your computer. Internet faxing allows you to send/receive faxes in your email inbox, so you can fax almost anywhere. Now you will only need to use your fax machine to print faxes that are actually important, saving you a lot of money on toner. For more information go to http://www.myfax.com
