Do potential employers check you out before they call for an interview?

Ask by sjrosario82: Do potential employers check you out before they call for an interview?
i’ve been faxing, emailing for jobs for weeks now, my resume was checked already, i’m going to school for AA degree, bur no one is calling me up. I don’t know what’s the problem. I’m on leave right now due to pregnancy, and i need to get hired by May 1st because I do not want to do childcare/babysitting anymore for preschool. Do they check your background before they call you?

Sometimes.
They sometimes check after the interview also. It is hard to say.
Answer by Gourmet Flossie
usually they will do the check after the interview or second interview if it went well.
Perhaps get a friend to read over one of your cover / application letters and offer some constructive criticism ??

If your resume was checked, then it is likely that some managers did go through a more detailed screening process. It i not unusual for hiring staff to check social networking websites (Facebook, MySpace) to determine someone’s character.
In some cases, someone in the business knows someone from your previous job and could give an informal reference.
Also, many jobs are going up in smoke because many business are suffering from the recession. Perhaps you are sending a resume that is not appealing to employers
Keep in mind that you are not the only person applying for these positions and it could be that there are more experienced candidates seeking the positions that you applied for.

probably not. usually after the 1st interview if you are under consideration.

I have always printed a resume and then faxed it in the past.

If you attended/graduated from college, check with their career center – they are great resources and can be tremendously helpful.
Here are a few samples (from my alma mater’s site) to get you started below. Be succinct and direct, and triple check for any spelling, grammatical, or punctuation errors! Try to keep it under one page if you don’t have much experience, and no more than 2 pages no matter what.
ALWAYS USE A COVER LETTER!
Good luck!

Save your resume as a word document. Compose an email and click attach files, browse then open. This will attach your resume to your email.

Besides setting all margins to 1″, the most important criteria for setting up a professional resume besides relevant text, is “scanability.” Here are some helpful tips:
1. Place just below your identification header [your hame, address, phone, email address] any Conditional Warning Statement such as “Confidential Resume,”Do Not Contact Current Employer,” etc.
2. Always fill-in an Objectives category [just below the Conditional Warning Statement] and make sure that he Objective will contribute to the profitability of your future employer;
3. Select a mono-type font such as Helvetica, Arial, Courier or Times Roman; do not select any cursive handwriting styles which cannot scanned;
4. Keep font sizes within a range of 10 to 12 pts.;
5. Avoid styling text with a justified alignment, keep it flushed left;
6. Instead of using tabs to set up blocked text entries, generate a table and use the column and row settings accordingly;
7. Do not place an i.d. picture anywhere on the resume, this is a major taboo due to discrimination issues;
8. Do not place any graphic text [saved as .gifs] onto the resume since it may be overlooked during the scanning phase;
9. List at the very end of the resume your interests which should include travel experiences, language skills, social interactions such as golf, team sports, tennis, etc.
In conclusion, the above helpful hints were designed to allow ease of scanning of your resume into PDF which can then be text captured for seach purposes by your potential employer. If the original resume was created in Word, WordPerfect or Mac Appleworks, it can be Saved As a PDF file which then can be saved as an email attachment. Otherwise, you can simply use a scanner and scan a hard copy of the resume and then save as a PDF file.
Failure to conform the resume to appropriate fonts and styles as outlined above will result in rejection of the resume simply due to the inability of the scanning device to properly index relevant resume entries.
Good luck!

Can employers do this? – Fax Driver

By Jules: Can employers do this?
I’m a truck driver who had to go on WSIB bc of a previous work injury. my job fired me bc it took too long to get paperwork from wsib. they said i can take my things out of my truck, that others had been using, if i paid the 100 float. i did and then she said i owed all this other money bc i was under 90 day and had to pay these fees. the truck wasn’t in the yard until a few hours so when i returned to empty as per our agreement originially i found that my PSP and digital camera was missing. i had witnesses say they saw her in there taking it out. is she allowed to take my personal belongings if i all of a sudden owe them money for collateral? or is it just plain illegal bc if someone owes me money it’s not like im allowed to go in their home and take things for collateral. i understand i owe money but the agreement was the 100 dollar float and to take my things. she has been rude calling me a liar and horrible names bc i couldn’t get a letter from wisb yet bc my claim isn’t fully processed and my person is on vaca and their fax machine is messed up. what should i do?is it illegal for her to take my things?

It is illegal. Take her to small claims court. Be sure to take your witnesses with you. If they don’t want to go, subpoena them. Also, take all paper work (receipts, etc.) Good luck.
