I just installed a new printer and the fax keeps showing ‘phone off hook’ error?

Fax Service: I just installed a new printer and the fax keeps showing ‘phone off hook’ error?
The printer is an HP all in one J6480 and we also have multiple lines. right now the fax is hooked to the same line as one of our overflow phone lines using an old US West splitter. I have tried all the recommended tasks to get the fax to work, and I have also checked the phone cord by bypassing the splitter and it works. Is there anyone who has had this problem or one like it? I think I need to get a newer connector for the splitter? Any ideas would be great!

Either that, or there are too many items on the phone line. Each splitter takes away a little current. If you have too many, there’s not enough current to pass a signal, thus “off hook”.

Hi there, I have been recommending that printer.
It has fax to pc feature so you wouldn’t have to print out all the fax you receive. Downside is you can only save it in black and white.

A “Phone Off Hook” message is not an error. It’s possible that splitter is broken. Run fax test off of printer. Press setup> tools> run fax test to determine the problem.

Answer:

Answer by coolerthanyou
yes.
just hook up the fax to the phone line and fax whatever you need to. Make sure to the fax is on the fax setting not the phone setting. Just remove the fax afterwards or else when people try to call your house they’ll hear that weird fax noise :P
i’ve done it before so i’m sure it will work for you.

Answer by ctleng76
Yes you can, you just need to set the fax machine to answer after a greater number of rings than your answering machine (if you have one). When you are expecting a fax, turn off your answering machine so that it does not answer before the fax machine.

Answer by blacy
Brother makes a fax called the intellifax. It costs less than 0 and you can hook it to your existing phone line. It can destinguish between incoming phone and fax calls and direct the call correctly. You can use it to send faxes at any time. I’ve had one for 5 years and it works perfectly.

Answer by fifty
Yes. There are a few ways of doing this. One is to place all of the things on your phone line into one long string. You can hook your answering machine into the phone jack, then hook the fax into the answering machine and hook the phone into the fax. Phone answering machines and faxes have an input and output jack.

Or you can buy something that could be thought of as a splitter and then hook all of your equipment into a separate split jack.

Or you can just unplug your phone and hook up your fax when you need it.

It theoretically should work, but on Magicjack’s FAQ section on their website, they don’t recommend it.

You will have to get your local phone company to install a jack for you.

Depending on you provider and lines run to your place, it may be a very simple addition for you as they usually can run a second line, using the existing lines that are already installed.

There are some wireless jack extenders that you can buy, but are not really recommended for fax, as the quality is not that great, and can be subject to interference which will result in poor or lost faxes, as well as a great deal of frustration.

You may also want to consider an Voip or broadband phone which seem to work extremely well. I have tried all options mentioned above with great success each time.

Good luck!

Answer by racegal23
radio shack sell as wireless jack to use in rooms with no jack. it’s kind of pricey (almost 100) but it will work, you wont have to pay the phone company to come out (they probably charge the same amount), you can take it with you when you move, and it’s a deductable business expense

Answer by ?
That’s an easy one. Check the link below. I believe radio shack carries a similar product.

get a printer networker…. can be found at frys…. outpost.com

Answer by dadofyou
If the computers are on a network then you may use the file and printer sharing in windows and connect the all in one to one of your PCs.
If you do not have a network then you may consider building a home network.

You can get more help at http://www.maincorporated.in/

Answer by Yusuf T
If your 2 or computers are on a network, you can easily share your printer / fax by just connecting it to one computer, than you can share it, than the other computers will connect to it via yours through a network address e.g \NameOfYourPc\SharedPrinter

Call dell and ask how and if possible

Answer by shortyxxs
You will need to ensure you have a sound card capable of playing at least 5.1 Surround sound.
Most modern Dells will come with the feature.

You will then need to ensure you have all of the necessary jacks to plug the wire into the back of your pc system.

If you are looking for a cheap but good quality 5.1 system I highly recommend:

Answer by JAMI E
Plug it into the earphone port on your computer. If the plug for your surround is too big you can get an adjuster at a computer store.

how do I hook up my 3050 so I can fax when I have Qwest DSL line directly plugged into the wall jack?

fax computer

By PJ: how do I hook up my 3050 so I can fax when I have Qwest DSL line directly plugged into the wall jack?
Moved my computer – everything worked great until I unplugged everything and mixed up the wires. To get the DSL to work Qwest said to plug it directly into the wall jack. This means I can’t fax using my HP Laserjet 3050 which is supposed to be plugged into the wall jack. the 3050 prints just fine but it wan’t fax.

Answer:

Answer by Vulcan_guy
Use a 2-way splitter- they usually come with your DSL modem.

The jack used by your HP 3050 should be filtered, the jack your modem plugs into should NOT be filtered so the DSL signal comes through.
