A fax machine uses the exact same line as voice calls use. The only difference is the tones used by the fax machine, which requires another fax machine to understand and translate them. The only reason that most companies use a different number for the fax line is because nobody knows in advance if it’s a voice call or fax call coming in. Interrupt the fax, and it doesn’t complete, so a whole new call is required to do it again.
There are functions on fax machines that you can set, such as the originating phone number (yours), the number of rings and/or tries before it hangs up and tries again, as well as whether to save and print out periodic reports of all transfers, successful or not.
But just to use your fax, either to send or to receive, you just hook it up to your phone line and plug in the power.

I also had to sign up for 2 year contract (why? I already have a ladline!), It was a good deal though, because the salesmen told me I can pay for this phone ($ 59 retail), or get a contract and it is free!

I’m looking for a free, easy to use fax program that I can run on my computer that I don’t have to have a land phone line for. I want to eliminate our home phone since the only people that call on it are telemarketers!
I’ve looked at all 3 websites, thanks for the advice. One question about Callwave, can I send faxes too? I can’t seem to find that on the website…

no such thing – all e-faxes cost money. To receive a fax, you do need a phone number of some sort – nobody will offer one for free. A service like that incurs true cost and there is no way of creating income through advertising like other online services.
The best deal out there IMHO is Callwave. .95 a month.

You can try MyFax. It’s not free but it’s very reliable and you can send and receive faxes.
