I assume you have a land line you can plug your computer’s modem into

Step 1- plug the modem into your phone jack
Bring up the document you want to fax on your word processor
Select file>print
In the box where you select your printer click on the drop down and select your fax driver instead of your printer
Click print
Follow the prompts to enter the phone number to dial and add a cover page if desired
Click send
The computer will dial the number and send the fax

Answer by Governator
Windows fax service works like a “remote printer”. You need to connect a phone line to your internal modem in order to use the windows fax. If you have your faxes in Word or PDF format, it might be easier to use a internet fax service such as http://www.GotFreeFax.com to send your faxes online.

Ask by Bandit: How do I use the internal fax in a Toshiba Sattelite Laptop ?
The laptop has a built in fax. Do I use an ethernet connection to my router and usb cable to my psc ?

The instructions show a telephone port that I don’t have. Can I use the ethernet port or do I need an adapter ?

I’m so dumb. LOL

you need a telephone line for fax unless you use online fax
you need a program called winfax
if you have a port for the phone then you can fax if no port no fax

Those computer programs are sometimes impossible to understand for the average Joe! I personally prefer using internet faxing services becuase it is easier, cheaper and faster. You can try them out for free as well :)

If you have fax software, I assume then that you also have a standard fax modem in your computer. Along with your DSL package, you would have received several little phone jacks called “Filters”. At least one of those filters should look like a phone splitter, except it would be labeled “DSL” and “Phone”.

If you dont have one of those filters, simply go to your nearest Radio Shack or Computer store and ask for a dual port filter. Once you have this, you will plug it into the wall phone jack, plug your DSL line into the side that says DSL and run a phone cable from your fax modem into the “Phone” side of the filter.

Once this is done, you will be able to send and receive faxes on that modem like before. You just had to filter the line out. Feel free to email me if you have additional questions.

P.S. Laughing at the 3rd guy – I’m a Support Rep at the New AT & T and we hate ASI :) They dont like us either though lol. I’m not making fun of him or his answer, just wanted to say he made me laugh :) His answer was awesome and probably robbed me of 10 points!

I am going to assume that if you have fax software on your computer that you also have a modem on it as well. In order to use the fax software on your computer, you will need to run a separate line (with a DSL Filter on it) to your modem. The modem will be able to use the standard side of the phone line while your computer is using the DSL side. You will not however be able to make or receive phone calls while you are faxing.

Ok, the guy before might have already answered here, but I will take it a tad father, incase you are missing the last step; most home installs give you that equipment and instructions. Call your provider if they didn’t. Now, coming out of your wall socket, you should have 2 phone cords, one going to your phone and one dsl modem, you need to get a regular two way splitter for a phone and then the cord out of the phone and attach the splitter there. You need 2 new cords now too, plug both into the new splitter of course and then one back into your phone and one into your computer. You should then be able to run the Windows fax wizard to set it up. This will not allow you to talk on the phone and fax at the same time, but you can send/receive faxes or talk on the phone with this set up and of course still be using the DSL.

P.S. they guy before me is now two guys before me lol

The quickest way to find your driver would be to use an automatic driver update utility. It will scan your system to identify your devices and then it will locate and download the proper driver for each device. I’ve been using the program from http://www.pcdriverupdate.com and it has saved me a lot of hassle when looking for drivers. Download the free scan from that link and see if it finds what you need.

I hope it helps, good luck!
