Does Magic Jack Fax? I need a cost effective solution ASAP?
Posted by in Fax Free on January 3, 2012

My Question: Does Magic Jack Fax? I need a cost effective solution ASAP?
If not is there a cheaper option for faxing outside of a dedicated home line?
There are fax to e-mail services and MagicJack does work with fax machines however they do not support it. It in theory should work, but if it doesn’t you are out of luck.
It faxes, but not well. In fact, MJ does not support fax issues except to tell you to slow down the speed and turn off ECM.
I use MaxEmal. It costs a year plus about 5 or 10 cents a fax outbound. Since I use my undedicated land line to fax out, I seldom use the outbound fax of my account. In fact, I still have credit left from my initial deposit. The economy price of MaxEmail gives you an 815 area code number in Suburban Chicago. I have not had anyone complain about the different number.

OOMA Q&A, OOMA vs Magic Jack? OOMA multi-line business? OOMA Linux Ubuntu?
Posted by in Fax Troubleshoot on November 1, 2011
Thing works like a charm, I love it! Magic Jack doesn’t work in Linux natively but OOMA works since it doesn’t touch your OS!
If you have a small business that needs multi lines, get Cisco IP phones used on ebay then buy 5 lines for a month! Remotely hosted IP Phone service.

My new 5.8ghz cordless phone wont ring if another phone or my fax machine is plugged into another jack – help!
Posted by in Fax Machine on July 26, 2011

Ask by G: My new 5.8ghz cordless phone wont ring if another phone or my fax machine is plugged into another jack – help!
It’s a Panasonic KX-TG5634 expandable 5.8ghz phone system.
If I unplug everything else from my phone jacks, the phone operates normally. If I plug just one wall phone, fax machine into another jack – the phone will not acknowledge an incoming call.
You can pick up the phone – hit talk – and it’ll work… but it won’t ring or register the call on it’s caller ID.
This is really annoying. Anyone have any suggestions?

The other pieces of equipment are stealing the signal that you have an incoming call.
Call Panasonic Customer Support and see what they can do for you. The number is on their website.

Adding additional phones to a line adds up to the REN on the line. Each phone has a Ringer equivelency number. One of your phones must have a high drain on the line. Try one at a time, and see which one is the culprit. I run three on one line, no problem. You also will have this problem if you live a long distance from your local telephone company central office!! (You can also disconnect the ringer on one of those other phones, lowering the load, and see if the others ring.!!)

It theoretically should work, but on Magicjack’s FAQ section on their website, they don’t recommend it.
(I tried Magicjack for phone service and wasn’t happy with the connection’s reliability)

You will have to get your local phone company to install a jack for you.
Depending on you provider and lines run to your place, it may be a very simple addition for you as they usually can run a second line, using the existing lines that are already installed.
There are some wireless jack extenders that you can buy, but are not really recommended for fax, as the quality is not that great, and can be subject to interference which will result in poor or lost faxes, as well as a great deal of frustration.
You may also want to consider an Voip or broadband phone which seem to work extremely well. I have tried all options mentioned above with great success each time.
Good luck!

radio shack sell as wireless jack to use in rooms with no jack. it’s kind of pricey (almost 100) but it will work, you wont have to pay the phone company to come out (they probably charge the same amount), you can take it with you when you move, and it’s a deductable business expense

That’s an easy one. Check the link below. I believe radio shack carries a similar product.

Q&A: There was an outgoing call logged on my Magic Jack which we did not made. Could someone hack in this manner? – Fax Computer

Question by Jessie: There was an outgoing call logged on my Magic Jack which we did not made. Could someone hack in this manner?
Hello, I am hoping someone can help me out. I have tried contacting MagicJack tech support but they were no help. Last night there was an outgoing call made on my Magic Jack which noone in the house made to 866-363-7172. Do you know if someone can hack my computer information via Magic Jack? When I dialed the number, there was only a computer/fax tone. The outgoing call on the log lasted only 1min 9 sec. Thank you for any help you can give.

Thats a long call for no one to have dialed from your house.
I have not heard of the line being hijacked in all that I have read.
Here are the links for a couple of non official MJ blog/help info.
Good Luck!
btw If you find out they can hijack, post and let us all know.
I have 3 MJ lines for almost 2 years now.

Q&A: Does Windows Fax and Scan (on Vista) require a phone jack connection?
Posted by in Fax Internet on May 11, 2011

Question by Jonathan C: Does Windows Fax and Scan (on Vista) require a phone jack connection?
Is it entirely over the Internet, or does it need to be connected to a phone jack? When sending, what will appear as the sender if there is no associated phone number?
Answer:
Answer by John
It emulates a conventional fax machine. It requires a conventional ‘phone line and an analog modem.
The receiver will see whatever you’ve set for your TSID text string.
Answer by Kevin S
You will need a modem and a phone line. They will see your phone number (the one the line is on), unless you have set up a name for it, which you can.

how do I hook up my 3050 so I can fax when I have Qwest DSL line directly plugged into the wall jack?
Posted by in Fax Computer on April 25, 2011

By PJ: how do I hook up my 3050 so I can fax when I have Qwest DSL line directly plugged into the wall jack?
Moved my computer – everything worked great until I unplugged everything and mixed up the wires. To get the DSL to work Qwest said to plug it directly into the wall jack. This means I can’t fax using my HP Laserjet 3050 which is supposed to be plugged into the wall jack. the 3050 prints just fine but it wan’t fax.
Answer:
Answer by Vulcan_guy
Use a 2-way splitter- they usually come with your DSL modem.
The jack used by your HP 3050 should be filtered, the jack your modem plugs into should NOT be filtered so the DSL signal comes through.

Question by dt: I have Skype and I have a phone jack in my computer how come it wont work?

skype doesn’t use a phone line but you need a microphone for it i think
Answer by DUNBAR PAPPY
Phones (and the phone lines) use analog signals; Skype (a VOIP server) uses digital signal… the two can be mated, but it costs to get the converter hardware (last time I looked)
Get yourself a headset (mic w/headphones) and you can use Skype-to-Skype service (free last I heard)

MagicJack says some fax machines will work. You’ll need to do a few things to your fax machine in order to see if yours will work. Here are instructions:

only the real old-fashioned faxes will work with the MJ…..but only one page at the time….use 9600baud rate and the overseas mode!
