Ask by monkey43_2000: I told AOL to cancel my service 3 months ago. They keep sending me notices I’m late on my bill. How do I stop
I have called, waited 3 minutes for a rep, told him I wanted to cancel, waited 21 minutes more for another person “from cancellations” she was nearly unintelligibly bad at english. Told me I couldn’t cancel because my name wasn’t on the contract. (later we noticed it WAS indeed! While waiting on the phone (timed by my Sprint cell) I connected with a rep online. This person finally had me so angry I threatened to get a lawyer. Then this “cancellations” person answered. We argued, while I was arguing with the online rep.!!! I saved all correspondence, and copied it. We faxed a cancellation request a month later, no response. We just got a bill for 3 months past due! I want to send this to the Better Business Bureau. I also want to sue AOL for harassment. These people have figured out the most frustrating cancellations methods I’ve ever seen. People of the world! UNITE!!! Let’s all cancel together! Please advise me on what anyone with similar experiences would or have done. I want to slam

If you’re within the U.S. you really need to file a formal complaint with your state’s Attorney General’s office. You will also want to dispute the charge with your credit card company. Doing the latter will likely mean that you’ll be drug into court but you can argue just what you’ve stated here, likely, and win.

AOL is known to try everything they can to keep customers from cancelling.

I had the same exact problem with aol. They even went into my bank account after i had cancelled. I did notify the BBB and i didnt have any more problems with aol. i would not reccomend aol to a dog. i would also suggest to any one that has aol get out now or you will pay for it later. i promise you, i been there and i’m never going back they are a rip off and im sorry you have to go through this bs because i know exactly how you feel. Thanks to BBB i am free of A.O.L. (asshole on line)

They have previously been notorious for that. I have seen class action lawsuits against them for it. I heard part of the problem is that they had a policy with their employees that penalized them if they lost so many customers per day, so more than likely, someone, just didn’t do what you wanted. They have recently changed their policies (like this month). So just call them at 2am some night and you’ll get right through. Don’t let them talk you into any free months or special parting deals. Just repeat I want this 3 month bill removed and I want to cancel my service. Be polite, but stick to repeating “I just want this 3 month bill removed and I want to cancel my service”. Then call them back in a couple of weeks and check that it was done.
UPDATE!!! THIS JUST IN….
I just saw this article on digg.com and thought it was hilarious and figured you’d like it too. It’s titled:
