In what order do I have to order my network diagram?

My Question: In what order do I have to order my network diagram?
I have to draw a diagram about small office network, it has 5 desktop computer, a printer, a fax, a server, a hub. And it uses a high speed DSL for internet connection.
I don’t know what order should be, is it
1. The server-DSL modem-firewall-internet? or
2. Server-firewall-DSL modem-internet? or
3. Server-router-firewall-internet? or
4. Server-firewall-router-internet? or how??

I should use DSL modem or a router or both??

Someone please help me if you know something about it..

Thank you..

Answer by Tracy L
I always diagram from the internet in. Looks like a pyramid that way.

(Internet)

Modem

Router

Switch/Hub

Computer — Computer — Computer –Fax– Server– Printer

One line from Internet to modem
one from modem to router (you can attach server and printer here if you like or connect all the the next connector)

one from router to hub/switch

then lines from switch to each device (you can even list IP’s as needed particularly if they are statically assigned which you do want for the server, printer, and fax.

Use Ethernet
Get a router and add Ethernet cards to any computers that need them. Then connect all machines to the router.
Trying to “network” machines through dial-up modems is really doing it the hard way

Answer by Kevin
Wow I tried to read that question and the typos made it difficult.

Anyhow, It appears you have a working network there and now you want to share your internet as well over it. this can be done two ways. The simplest is to purchase a router and plug your ADSL modem into the router (WAN port) then plug all the other computers on your network into the switch built into the router.

The second way is to enable ICS on your windows XP machine but you will need two network cards in that pc one to connect to the modem and the other to connect to the network switch or hub. To do this it is pretty self explainitory within the network setup wizard.
Keep in mind though using the ICS you will need to keep the host pc on anytime any of the computers want to connect to the internet and it will also be limited in speed to the weakest link in your network as well.

By far the best solution is to use a router to share the connection.

Answer by Bruce Goss
You need a router. wired or wireless depending on your setup.

Connect the incoming net to the router then each computer to the router.

While you are at it you might want to install the new gigabit network cards and cat6 cables. You can get the cards for .00 at the PC Club (on the net).
You will see an increase in speed of download and be ready for advances in technology.

How do I setup network faxing?

fax computer

Question by Davin A: How do I setup network faxing?
I have a computer in my network that has a fax modem.

Is there a way to setup my network that lets any computer send a fax request to that computer w/ the fax modem to fax a document out using its fax modem?

Good Answer:

Answer by dr.bucksnort
it has been sometime since i have done this so i admit to being a little rusty on this one .

you have to get your xp disk and on the xp disk install fax tools onto the host pc and every pc u want to fax from ,

then like a printer share the fax in the network . you may have to change the fax driver to tiff ( just a quick setting ) and it should be good to go

Answer by vikingsorbust
1. Open up the Control Panel
2. Double Click on the Mail/Fax icon
3. Click on the Add button
4. Select Network Fax Server and click on the OK button
5. When you are prompted for the Network Fax directory, enter the UNC name to the Fax server you created in the steps above.

For example, it the server’s computer name is FAXSERVER and the directory you shared was FAX, the UNC name would be \FAXSERVER\FAX

Good Luck!

Need help setting up new computers to existing network printer?

Ask by Trent: Need help setting up new computers to existing network printer?
We have a Ricoh color copier/fax/printer in our office that is hooked up to the network and everyone who is in the office now can print to it just fine, however, we just recently got a few new employees who need to have it set up so they can print.

I have loaded the drivers on the computers in question, went to find new printer wizard and found it, got it all set up yet it will not print a test page or any other document.

I have double checked all of the settings and drivers with every computer in our office that can print to that printer and it is exactly the same. Anyone got any ideas? The IT guy we use charges us $ 300 per visit so im trying to save him as a last resort.
Thanks for the quick reply Viper, but that is what I have done. As I stated above, Everything is exactly the same as every other computer in my office, IP, printer name, driver, port, etc.. Its just not printing on the new computers

Answer:

Answer by Viper
When I set up network printers, first thing I do is go to the printer and using the built in menu on the printer, I print out it’s configuration. That then gives me the IP address to the printer.

Then I will go to the computer, click add a printer and select the radio button – A network printer.
Then I type in the IP address for that printer.
Before I would have downloaded the drivers from the website, like hp.com if the printer is from HP.
Then when it says which printer, I select have disk and point to the drivers.

Then it should print fine.

Help with an advanced network printer issue.?

fax driver

Ask by giroeterno: Help with an advanced network printer issue.?
I have an HP1320 connected to a printer hub and plugged into the wall. I added the printer to a couple of new PC’s and it was working fine. Went I went to add it to another PC I got the message “the print driver on the server is the incorrect one” so I used a driver I found online. Since about then, I have not been able to locate the printer on the network (Previously it would show up when accessing the network folder under the “Printers and Faxes” folder, now that folder doesn’t show up under the network folder on any PC) The printer can no longer print from any of the new PC’s it was installed on. It only prints from the PC belonging to the administrator, who is also the owner of the printer on the network. Even on that PC, it still doesn’t show up on the network folder, but it still prints. It cannot print from any of the PC’s it was newly installed on. Any help?

Answer:

Answer by Czar
Have you tried sharing the printer using the Administrator profile?

I think you should only use the new driver provided by the HP support page, because this is the latest.

AND OTHER SIDE, ON SERVER 2008 I HAVE SHARED THE PRINTER

Good Answer:

You have to install the drivers and software to your server machine before you share the printer!
You have to install drivers and software on every one of your client machines!
Then give them the path and then test!
I hope it helps

Printer and fax network setup? – Fax Internet

Ask by sockssoxs1: Printer and fax network setup?
I have a HP printer and an HP fax/printer on a desktop. If i have a laptop in another room, how can i connect the laptop to the desktop printer using the high speed internet or connection.

If the printer has built in wifi, then you just have to download the disc, but if not, i don’t think you can go through your wireless network and access another computer’s printer. HP does sell a wireless adapter so try that.
