I was assigned to 20 community service hours for probation a while back. My friend’s mom owns a business and I went there a couple hours a day and helped her file papers, send faxes, clean up. It’s not a non-profit organization, but I wasn’t paid for my work.
Will those hours count?

Probably not. The probation officer will have a list of places you can do you CS and get credit.

No that does not qualify as community service since only your mom’s friend benefited from your assistance. Better hurry and get those hours done before you appear before the judge for noncompliance

You donated time to your friends mother, not the community. She made a profit from your time, your time needs to be in the non-profit sector.

Almost undoubtedly not. Community service is about doing something to serve the community. However great your friend’s mom’s business might be it probably does not care for homeless humans and animals, feed hungry people, etc. You may be able to do these same kinds of things for a nonprofit organization however. Talk with your PO and see but it is very unlikely. Something you did not ask but the sooner you get your hours in the better. Too often people leave them till the last min and end up in trouble bec they did not finish or having to do stuff they hate to get them in..
