An Ethernet Switch allows you to connect multiple TCP/IP devices together.
A Router connects different networks together (ie, your home network and the Internet). All home routers include an Ethernet Switch as part of the unit.

The easiest way is to phone another phone that has caller ID.
A slightly harder way is to find out the number from your phone company which speaks back the number it was called from.

Have you tried making a phone call from the non-functioning number? This will tell you if there is a break in the line, too much noise, etc. You could call the operator to make sure it is the correct line.

Well, if both jacks are for the same fax #, then perhaps one of the outlets is bad or doesn’t work. Replace the outlet and see what happens then. Power outlets are pretty cheap, so it won’t cost you much to try installing a new one. It couldn’t hurt.

I’m not sure if I’m understanding your problem correctly or not, but if it is an electrical outlet that you are plugging the fax machine into… then perhaps the one that isn’t working is an outlet which is connected to a wall switch which may be off. I live in an apartment and have a couple of outlets like this, and the best way I have found is to take a small lamp and plug it into an outlet that you know works, turn it on, then plug it into the outlet that doesn’t seem to be working and switch on and off all the light switches in that room.
Hope this helps, and sorry if it didn’t. But sometimes it’s the simplest thing that we’re overlooking when troubleshooting these kinds of issues.

A set of wireless telephone jacks should do the trick! I know radio shack used to carry these but here they are on Amazon for cheaper:
