Doesn’t fax on distinctive ring impede 911 calls?
Posted by in Fax Free on January 19, 2012

Question: Doesn’t fax on distinctive ring impede 911 calls?
I got a separate telephone number on my first PSTN home phone line with distinctive ring for the purposes of receiving faxes, which is a cheaper alternative to paying for a second line. My all-in-one printer supports picking up on distinctive ring. However, I am concerned that if the fax machine is in the middle of receiving a fax, what if I have to dial 911 for an emergency? Wouldn’t I have to physically disconnect the fax machine from the line and wait for the line to reset? Is there a safe way to do this and still allow me to dial 911 without delay? Is having fax on distinctive ring on the same line considered safe enough for most home users in this context?
You can simply turn off the fax machine and the line will be free immediately.
How often do you call 911 anyway ?
It’s probably the same chance as you being on the phone with someone and needing to call 911. Sure it could happen, but just how many times in your life are you going to dial 911? Except for the fact that I have to test it, I can think of 2 or 3 times in 15 years that I called 911.
Pretty small odds.

My new 5.8ghz cordless phone wont ring if another phone or my fax machine is plugged into another jack – help!

Ask by G: My new 5.8ghz cordless phone wont ring if another phone or my fax machine is plugged into another jack – help!
It’s a Panasonic KX-TG5634 expandable 5.8ghz phone system.
If I unplug everything else from my phone jacks, the phone operates normally. If I plug just one wall phone, fax machine into another jack – the phone will not acknowledge an incoming call.
You can pick up the phone – hit talk – and it’ll work… but it won’t ring or register the call on it’s caller ID.
This is really annoying. Anyone have any suggestions?

The other pieces of equipment are stealing the signal that you have an incoming call.
Call Panasonic Customer Support and see what they can do for you. The number is on their website.

Adding additional phones to a line adds up to the REN on the line. Each phone has a Ringer equivelency number. One of your phones must have a high drain on the line. Try one at a time, and see which one is the culprit. I run three on one line, no problem. You also will have this problem if you live a long distance from your local telephone company central office!! (You can also disconnect the ringer on one of those other phones, lowering the load, and see if the others ring.!!)

I have a Small Business, is Ring Central Office a Good Option for Me?

Ask by Jonah Montgomery: I have a Small Business, is Ring Central Office a Good Option for Me?
I’ve been hearing about Ring Central and some of the features they offer would work well for my small business (the virtual assistant, fax/email/etc) not sure though how it is in real life. Anyone with experience?
Thanks

I actually started using Ring Central specifically for their “auto receptionist”. I just wanted my business to seem a bit bigger than me sitting at my house on my computer!!
I’ve been using the service for a few months now – and have the phone management and 800 number as well as the virtual fax. Its actually drawn several compliments from friends who know how and where I work…they think I’ve gotten an office!
Oh, and I got a free trial by using a Ring Central coupon I found here http://www.discountspies.com/ringcentral-coupon/. It made it really easy to decide if it was for me or not since I didn’t have to pay anything if I didn’t like it.
Best of luck. I’d definitely recommend at least trying Ring Central Office as it really is an inventive solution for people with small businesses, like us!

How do I set up the smart ring service for my phone?

By osubeavs1991: How do I set up the smart ring service for my phone?
I just added smart ring with our phone service so I can receive faxes at my home phone number. What steps do I take to make sure I have set up the distinctive ring sound correctly?
Answer:
Answer by CC
If you have a cell phone then set your smart ring to your cell # or if not have who ever you set your smart ring to to call you. This will definitely verify and quickly. Otherwise call your provider and they will tell you after you wait on hold for however long. Good luck. We have it and it works. I just cant ever remember whos # goes with which ring. Its fun anyway and the more they call the sooner you will pick up on the ring types for each person.

FAQ: when someone calls my phone number, my fax machine picks up on the first ring.?

Question by Brenda V: when someone calls my phone number, my fax machine picks up on the first ring.?
I don’t want it to pick up on the first ring. I want to be able to answer my phone and only worry about the fax machine when a fax is coming through. Anyone have any suggestions?

There should be a switch that you can set to # rings before answering. Be wary if you have an answering machine. The 2 may conflict.
Answer by david2718281828
You can also set the fax machine so it never answers the phone automatically. It will explain how to do this in the manual. If you don’t have the manual, you can usually get it online from the manufacturer’s website (in PDF format, which you can read with the free Adobe Acrobat reader).

Ask by Dylan: Should my fax machine ring when someone calls my house phone?
I just hooked up my new fax machine, I replaced the telephone jack that was hooked up to one of my phones with the fax machine. Every time someone calls my home phone the fax rings. I can also make phone calls from my fax machine to other phones. Am I going to be able to receive faxes properly?
Answer:
Answer by Cain
You have to get a Fax Jack. You won’t receive faxes until you get a Fax Jack.
Answer by joe r
looks like you are using the same phone line for your voice and fax line…
if you set your fax to TEL/FAX you can share the line for fax and phone, the fax will answer all calls after the 1st or 2nd ring and determine if it is a fax or voice call… if it is a fax it will go thru, if it is a voice call – it will ring what ever phones are connected to the phone port on the back of the fax machine (other phones will not ring, but will be able to answer the call)
another option would be to get distinctive ringing, and set your fax to answer the distinctive ringing pattern – distinctive ringing gives a second phone number with a different ring pattern on your same phone line for about per month…
Answer by Carl N
The joke is, Who uses a fax machine anymore? I can think of about 4 ways to make this work, depending on how much you plan on using this.
First, you could set the fax machine to not ring and just use it for outgoing faxes and use a service for incoming faxes. I use MaxEmail for about a year. Second, you could get a fax switch for about to answer all calls and pick out the fax calling tone. Third, if you have service from the telco, you could get distinctive ring line for about a month. Last, you may have the ability for the fax machine to screen your calls. The HP brand usually has instructions in the manual to put an answering machine and phone on the line to have it answer with a message for fax senders to press “send” and your fax will turn on. If the sender is already sending a CNG tone, it will switch automatically.

How do I make my fax machine not to ring in my home line? – Fax Machine

By alzol: How do I make my fax machine not to ring in my home line?
I have a fax machine line and a home phone line, two different lines, but when I get a fax it rings in my fax machine and home line. How do I make my fax machine stop ringing in my home line when I get a fax. in other words how do I make my fax machine ring only in the fax machine line and not my home line. Thank you

It must be connected to your home phone line, that is the only way it would ring when someone calls that number..so you have to disconnect it.
Answer by Cableguy
you may have different jacks but the same line. Just turn off the fax and turn it on only when you need to use it or are expecting a fax
Answer by Black & Proud–Sayin’ It L
Yeah, I have that problem too with our fax at our daycare center. What it is is that I will use it to send a fax but forget and leave it plugged in. The bich will ring loud as hellll to while the kids are napping. So, I just go unplug it from the socket but leave the phone line hooked to it. See, we have separate jacks, but the same phone line is used for both. If you don’t do this, you could request a SEPARATE fax number that is different from your phone number.
Answer by forcrynoutloud
All ‘Brother’ brand fax machines have the ability to distinguish between incoming fax and voice calls so you can use all of our faxes with a single phone line. You can choose the answer mode best suited to handle your incoming calls. your machine may have this feature too, check your manual.
You can also buy a fax detection device that will detect an incoming fax and not ring your phone..
Check out this site it’s in the UK but they are also available in the US…I don’t know where you are.
