Ask by bingomom: I am furious with the school system, Would you be upset?
My husband and I moved into our new home December 2006 something we have work hard for 27 years to get. After Christmas my daughter and her 3 children moved in with us. Her girls were in school one in kindergarten, the other in 2nd grade. We filled out all the necessary document needed, 2 utility bills, and 2 affidavits notarized by my bank for them to ride the school bus, the school was the same school they attended previously. We had 2 teachers come to our home to make sure this is where they lived even after all the proper paper was filled out. I dealt with the school bus driver making comments to the girls I didn’t like BUT I Iet all this go. 2nd school year the same thing happened all documents filled out, with exception this year my husband a MSG actively serving in the US Army Reserves had to fax them a copy of our deed of trust. This is ridiculous I want to know how many Latinos or Mexican families had to show the green cards, or proof of citizenship? I was told that I should not be upset about this because the schools was over crowded and the school buses and they had to make sure the children was living where we claimed. Please if you think I am upset for nothing let me know.

I think that it aint your fault there are like thirty thousand illegal immigrants & that you should be patient because they just want to check this children’s safety I mean, if they didn’t, they would be a bad school.

File a “Formal” written complaint to your school board, city council, and mayors office. They are over stepping their authority!

Some proof is important but you are a victim of overkill – I would protest to the school board. If you learn of any illegals who obviously were not subjected to the same scrutiny then I would advise the school of this.

Our school system usually asks for directions to your home. They don’t tell you that they are going to do it, so it is hard to “prevaricate”. I know in Charleston SC the schools are overcrowded. They check each and every student’s physical address even with deeds of ownership and bills. A lot of people have faked their address in order to get their kids into the better schools. Even if you live in the area that has the better school, it is so crowded that some kids — even though they live in the correct area — are denied entrance into the “better” school. It has a lot of parents angry because it costs more to live in that district and they feel that their property taxes (each county supports their own county’s school) should be used to help their own kids’ school, not the one that they have been crowded out of. The situation is very messy and aggravating. When you moved to that area so that your kids could attend that school, it can be extremely upsetting when your kid can’t get in due to overcrowding. It is basically a protection so that parents can’t cheat to get their kids into the better schools in the area.

If it feels like it has to do with your race, you can submit a letter to the school board and tell them what happened. You can get the address from the school district office. If they feel things were done improperly and that the search for documentation was a violation of your right to equal access to schools, they would be the first stop along the way to getting the problem to stop. If, however, all families are subjected to this search or if families are chosen randomly for the search, that might be why you have had to go through this twice. Just make sure you note that you had to go through this last year and that nothing has changed about your living circumstances. Hopefully this can get the perceived harassment to end.

I hope it isn’t due to your race. It is against the law for them to discriminate. If the school gives you an unsatisfactory response, you might want to hire a lawyer. But don’t take that step until it is your last resort. You don’t want to antagonize the school. You just want fair treatment. If every parent or many other parents of varying cultures/race are being treated the same way, then there is no discrimination. Just bad luck on your part to be chosen two years in a row.

THAT IS HORRIBLE. nevermind being able to enjoy the fact that you have purchaced your own home, nevermind that your husband is FIGHTING FOR OUR COUNTRY *my dad is in the army national gaurd, he just came home from kuwait after 18 months… so this hits home* you have every right to be upset! you are tax paying citizenz, and should be treated as such! i’m curious to know what kind of comments this bus driver was saying to your grand children, as RESPONSIBLE ADULTS they should not have involved these children ANY more than they had to! I get angered when adults bring children into certain situations they should not have to worry about…… how are the children adjusting to this? are they being treated ok at school, teachers, peers etc..? if not, you should go to the school board or wherever you need to to resolve this problem, it is not right.
