Q&A: Do companies sell printers at less than cost and make money on ink?
I just bought a printer with fax and scanner and it is also wireless. It cost me $ 70 at Costco. It comes with ink that would cost $ 45. That means they sold the printer for $ 25. They can not make money at that price.
It is not the ink that cost a lot. It is the cartridge with a print head that we throw away.
Yes, they do, my friend.
The thinking behind this is that you’re sort of ‘tied’ to purchase inks from the same company … or go out an buy a different printer, which they assume people would be unwilling to do as they MIGHT consider that they’ve wasted money.
Believe me, if you do keep the same printer for it’s life expectancy, you’re going to spend a small fortune on ink cartridges … quids in for the printer manufacturers, who also happen to be the ink cartridge manufacturers, though there are third-party companies that make ‘compatible’ cartridges … where the law allows them.
Printers are actually quite cheap to manufacture. The only way the printer companies make money is off the ink cartridges. And they continue to make money by selling new printers, so I’d say the actually do make money at the price they sell them at. The typical iPod Touch only costs about in parts and that just need to be put together. Per unit, they’re actually worth about 0 instead of the 0 Apple charges for the 32 GB model. It’s simple economics that determines how much money printer companies make as well…they manufacture cheap and sell them for more than they’re worth. Ink cartridges should only really cost no more than per cartridge since the manufacturing costs of those are also extremely cheap.

look at it my way ,
you get store flyers in the mail every week , and those flyers are covered with tons of ink .
and lots of paper , so they don’t even charge you for all this paper covered with all this ink .
so in my opinion we are vastly riped off on ink prices , they are making a killing on ink .
think about it .
well if the ink does not cost much than what are empty cartridge worth ?
yes. but they get to write them off for the loss revenue.

Q&A: So microsoft window vista has less usefulness than windows 98?
I could send faxes from Windows 98 bitware fax just fine. Now I understand that I cannot from VISTA? I had to blow the dust off a computer from the garage and fire it up just to send a fax.
I guess you’ve never heard of sending a fax online?
Just as Windows XP allowed you to send a fax through your computer, you can send a fax with Microsoft Vista

I send FAXes through VISTA just fine.
Vista has more features than XP and DEFINITELY more than 98. The problem with it is that those features don’t come in a nice package. I’d say go for XP or Windows 7. But any useful feature Windows 98 had, Vista is sure to have it.

We recently acquired a Brother Intellifax 770 we need to use for three weeks. We can send faxes and not receive. When we dial the fax # from a regular phone, we get the shriek sound of reaching a fax, but when sending a test fax, the sending machine repeatedly says “function was not completed.” the sending machine can successfully send faxes elsewhere.
The display on the Intellifax says RECEIVING when a fax call is coming in, but nothing happens. (I’ve confirmed paper is loaded properly, it does print properly when printing a report.)
The owners manual, found online, is not helpful nor was my search for “brother intellifax 770 not receiving” in google.
I hope someone is a great googler for me. This is really annoying.
p.s., it is set to auto receive FAX ONLY.

Try turning off, auto receive, and test if you can receive faxes, manually.

Some law firm from UTAH called my mother’s answering machine left a rude msg that they are going to sue me and take me to court over a Providian CC I once had. I called them today and and the guy hung up on me 2x. Finally I called back and got a “manager” he basically told me that the collectors sold it to them and they will serve me papers and sue me if I do not pay it off. I am a student and only make $ 8/hour!!! He basically is trying to force me into paying a sum of $ 25 a month w/post dated checks! He also is demanding that I get to a fax machine immediatley so he can fax me some papers to sign and then wants me to give him 3 months worth of post-dated checks! I don’t know what to do but I have had other bills that I am worried about paying besides a cc bill from 5 years ago! Is there any free legal advice, can they really do this and should I sign those papers???
I actually live in OKLAHOMA, but that law firm that I have spoken w/is in Salt Lake City, UTAH

I would just forget about it, too much trouble. If it’s from 5 years ago the interest rates and fees have probably accumulated to way more than just 00, otherwise they wouldn’t be bothering you at all.

That happened to me years ago and nothing happened. The CC company already wrote it off as a lost and I just got bad credit. Then the debt was sold again and the same thing happened. It went on for 6 years. That was 20 years ago. I don’t know how far they go now.

yes eventually they do get some of there money…but check with a legal aid i think there is a time limit on some of them..call a lawyer..they can tel you how you can recieve some legal advice….free or real cheap ..and dont sign any papers without knowing what your signing

Yes, they do. However, if it has been five years I wouldn’t pay anything until I checked a few things out. I don’t know anything about the debt laws in your state, but in Texas a debt is considered null and void after seven years from the last date you made any payment on it. They also cannot call your mom and leave rude messages on her phone if you do not live there. Let them know that you have no means of paying the debt until you finish school and that you will contact THEM when you are ready to make payment if it happens to be before the seven year cutoff.

You’ll have to either go into the printer setup configuration and change it there, or go into the computer settings for the printer port setup and change it there.
Without knowing the make & model of your printer or the version of Windows you’re using, it’s hard to be specific.

i don’t think you can so just put them in the same album and make it so that why you are in my pictures it shows as FILM STRIP instead of list or icons or whatever and then you can just view them right after one another… if you know what I mean.

.. method of communication? That is, should I invest in a faxing machine or printer that contains fax and scanner capabilities? This may benefit me much for the future.

Fax’s are an old fashioned way of communicating, but a scanner can be invaluable when it comes to just simply copying documents and emailing them. The all-in-one printer/driver/fax/scanners that are around these days are so cheap, why not? Might as well!
You will have to have a land line (telephone) in order to take advantage of FAX. Many providers will not allow you to use FAX on their lines because it hogs up line bandwidth. So make sure you call your phone company and ask.
I use a little program (cheap, .95) called MightyFax.
It is simple, efficient and does the job.

yes….just buy a 2 dollar splitter….but the fax line in it and in the other , the phone line…

Yes! but you will need to sign up with your local carrier to distinguish between a fax call and a voice call otherwise the fax will always pick up. The manual has more details on this…change your settings on the machine to what you handle mostly on the fax/phone.

yes you can. I have mine set up that way. and I have caller ID. I see who is calling and if it is someone I don’t want to talk to I let the fax machine pick it up.

you would need a modem and software. i THINK there are also a couple of websites that will fax documents for you. I don’t think you can do it through DSL, but I could be wrong. Also, some mail programs can fax documents as well. In Mac, you can set it up through system preferences.

www.smartfax.com; it faxes your scanned document thru the internet to any fax number. it does cost a monthly fee of 6.95, so i guess it would depend on how often you need to fax as to if its worth it. I dont know of any free service that does that.

Get a fax modem and isntall it. Then get a telephone wire and plug it into the fax modem. Then install Vista and open Windows Fax and Scan. You can use windows fax and scan to fax a document by just scannning it. I dont know how to do this on XP
