Think about it … if anyone is using a computer (and, reading this) they’re probably NOT going to be writing long hand. You’re advertising in the wrong place. You need to be advertising where there are low tech people, not high tech people. Try posting this on the message board at the local library.

What type of small gift can I give to a lawyer who provided some free legal advice?
Posted by in Fax Free on February 26, 2011

Question by Newly-subordinated: What type of small gift can I give to a lawyer who provided some free legal advice?
I called up a law firm I hadn’t dealt with before with a quick question about a particular area of law and faxed a document. One of the lawyers called back and verbally told me what he thought (it had to do with an employment contract). When I asked how much I owed, he said it was “on the house” and he was happy to help.
My question is what can I send him as a token of my appreciation? I thought it was nice of him not to bill me.

1. A Starbucks gift card 2. A Thank you card and also giving him permission to use your quotes as a testimonial. 3. A package of sticky notes with Lawyer, thank you or other word to express appreciation.

Answer by For ever in my Heart
yes that was nice of him. Some law firms give 30 free minutes consultation. also in the hopes you will use there firm in the future its good for business. However a nice thank you card expressing his kindness to you and throw in a gift card for a coffee shop in his area with money on the card for free coffees can’t hurt its a small token of your appreciation this should suffice. I wouldn’t go over the top . Yet good for you to acknowledge someone who is being kind in the world. We normally hear of negativity. So it would be nice for this man to know that he did help someone out who appreciates his kindness. I think he would appreciate that you took the time to thank him in this manner. Rather than just a thanks over the phone and thats it.

Question by organizehomeoffice: What is needed to organize a service type of business? I am going to hire a few contractors & do the marketing?
and answer the calls, scheduling & making sure they get paid. What do I need to do. I will use my home office & they will supply their own tools & be contractors. What do I need in my office. Phone, fax, copier, calender, invoices, envelopes. It seems simple what am I forgetting. I need a way to keep track of customers & have never used a computer to do that. Is that the best way? or is it Ok to use a notebook?
Thank you as you can tell I am very new to all of this.

I own a computer consulting firm. I use Service CEO but there are numerous software tools like this to integrate things like Service Schedulng, Project Management, Invoicing, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and Service Contract Management. A notebook would be just fine in running these.
You might want to look into ne of these types of packages. Also, you should develop a very good sub-contractor agreement and have a local attorney review it for you and have all your subs read and sign it. They will be representing YOUR company and interests and not their own. The clients you acquire are yours and you need to protect your interests.
Answer by chris h
You should get some accounting software, such as quickbooks, you will need to get liability insurance, you need to get a business telephone number, you should also get your self set up with a web site and email address for your own domain. The quickest thing to do is go to the yahoo small business site pick a domain name and sign up for one of their packages. It is the most inexpensive domain registration/email/website combo I have seen.
Very important, go find a CPA to use for your taxes, and as an accounting consultant
Answer by Major Tom
You definitely need a computer with a good antivirus. I recommend Kaspersky. First, I would suggest you do a system restore to wipe the entire hard drive clean before you install anything. Phones, faxes, copiers, and calenders would be very beneficial. Might I suggest making yourself a business card for good measure? Also, a secondary e-mail address, some consultants, and a sponsor could help. Do you have good interpersonal skills and a patent lawyer? That could be another asset.

What type of device would I need to use my Magic Jack(VOIP) phone line to fax with on a standard FAX Machine?
Posted by in Fax Service on January 2, 2011
By clifftonian18: What type of device would I need to use my Magic Jack(VOIP) phone line to fax with on a standard FAX Machine?
I currently have a Panasonic plain paper fax and copier as well as my Lexmark All in one Printer/Fax. I really want to be able to utilize both of my fax setups here at home, but I am aware that Im using a Digital (VOIP) phone line versus an analog fax machine as well as a V.90 56k modem. I can either use my V.90 56K modem through the computer or use my fax machine, which both of them will dial out the number of the other party; but the other partys FAX machine does not recognize the digital signal, so it fails to go through. I have done some research on the problem at hand, I read up on something called an ATA box; but im not sure if thats going to solve my problem or not. I need something thats not to exspensive that will work for home office use. I am running Windows XP service pack 3, and I am using Clearwire Wireless internet access. I understand that using wireless connections arent good either for what im trying to do, but surely it can be done i would think. Please help.
Thanks,
Clifton
I have two more questions. 1. Would I be able to still use my Magic Jack, and would it still be kept hooked up the way it is to my computer like im using it now?
Which I would assume the fax machine would be hooked up seperatly and have its own number right? 2. Does the device you mentioned also act as a regular router as well?, and does this ATA device need another program or provider for it to have its own number for the fax machine to run without using the number that Magic Jack provided me? I really need to know how to set up all that up if I was to buy that device.
I have one other thing that I need to know. How can I go about making the router part wireless? I may endup sharing my internet connection with my mother soon, but I really dont want to have to run any wires, is there any way around that, like an adapter I can use for the router part of it? or do they make a wireless version?

MagicJack claims it *might* work if you try this:
1) Turn off Error Correction on your fax machine
2) Set your fax to the slowest speed available, test to see if it works
3) Check every other speed to see if it works
I have the same issue I am going to try the above. I don’t think all the stuff you mentioned above makes any difference you have to set the fax machine up differently
Answer by Mr. VoIP
I expect your chances of success are better if you use a VoIP ATA (analog telephone adapter) such as the Linksys SPA2102-NA connected directly to the Internet Modem and not through the computer. It can be purchased for around .
The SPA2102-NA is unlocked and user configurable and has two VoIP channels so that one can be configured with a VoIP account for voice and the 2nd line could be configured with a VoIP account optimized for Fax.
The SPA2102-NA also has a built-in Nat-Router and QOS for VoIP priority. It is always best to connect it directy to an Internet Modem that does not have a built-in router, as many routers block vital VoIP ports.
I use the Linksys SPA2102-NA and configure it to work with BYOD (bring your own device) VoIP providers like CallCentric.
————————————
1.
Yes, and yes.
For optimal results, the Linksys SPA2102-NA should be connected directly to an Internet Modem (preferably a Modem with no router). The SPA2102-NA has its own built-in Router with VoIP QOS control. Then hook your PC with magicjack to output of SPA2102 LAN Ethernet output jack.
The SPA2102 will operate independently from the magicjack, and yes the Linksys would be configured to connect to a completely separate VoIP provider. The VoIP account configured in the SPA2102 would potentially have its own Phone Number (DID) for Fax (or voice).
2.
You do not need any extra software to configure the Linksys ATA. It has built-in VoiP Firmware.
Configure the ATA with a VoIP service like CallCentric, or InPhonex.
CallCentric provides device configuration settings suggestions on their website help and support section.
You would purchase a phone number from them (called a “DID”). A DID only costs .95/month + 1.5¢/min for incoming calls (or Faxes), or .95/month for Unlimited incoming calls.
3.
For the Linksys SPA2102-na to be reliable, you do need a reliable HighSpeed Internet connection.
Also, when configuring the ATA, it Must be set to use G.711u pass-through VoIP Codec. Any other codec will not work for Fax.
——————————-
SPA2102-NA with Wireless Router:
Here is how my network is wired:
Internet–> Modem–> SPA2102–> WRT54G–> wired and wireless PC’s
I connect my WRT54G wireless router to Ethernet output of SPA2102 ATA.
Then, my local PC is connected to port-1 Lan port of WRT54G.
Then, my laptop is wireless connected to wireless link to WRT54G.
The only issue with Router like WRT54G after the ATA is that if any of those PC’s are runing a VoIP Softphone (like magicjack), then you need to know how to Port Forward or trigger ports 5060-5070 (UDP). Otherwise VoIP on PC’s may not work due to blocked ports.
This is also why you don’t want any other Router before the ATA, as it may be blocking VoIP SIP (session initiation protocol) ports and RTP ports (16,384-16,482) that the ATA requires.
Answer by Jacqueline
Faxing on your regular voip lines like MJ isn’t that reliable. So unless its a common fax and not an important one then its okay otherwise don’t expect your faxes to get through all the time.

I want to type documents for people that can’t type, or can’t type fast. Where do I start? Do I need a permit?
Posted by in Fax Service on December 18, 2010

Ask by WinterRose: I want to type documents for people that can’t type, or can’t type fast. Where do I start? Do I need a permit?
I really want to use my typing skills to help people that either can’t type at all, or just can’t type fast. I would like to start a service where people either scan and email, fax, or verbally dictate their document to me (either for school, business, or personal) and I will type it up for them, and then either email or mail (or both) the typed copies to them.
My question is: Where do I start? And do I need a permit to do this? What are some ideal rates to charge? I was thinking of $ 0.05 a word.
Is there anybody already doing this that can maybe give me some advice?
Also, as part of this service, I would like to help limited English speakers by editing their papers and fixing the grammar and mechanics for them.
Please help!

Answer by daisy5263
First off , personally I think 5 cents a word far to cheap… I think maybe 1.50 to 2.00 a good rate per page… you are offering far more then what people would be expecting to get…
As far as a permit concerned – unless you were starting this as a full time business/ job, I wouldn’t worry about it just now….
you would have to think this in terms as a wage, salary…
you want to advertise as cheaply as possible, so maybe post at schools, dry cleaners, any public bulletin board…. you could even open a my-space account and advertize…. make use of your Yahoo id, advertize….
I think your idea is great, word of mouth is the best advertisement – use it….
good luck.
Answer by Lui
I think 5 cents per word is stupid, plain and simple. Charge a flat fee, do away with complex systems for figuring out how much you charge. A confused customer is not a happy customer.
Offer a flat fee, like 1 page , 10 pages , 50 pages , 100 pages . Something like that. Remember deals if they need a lot of pages.
You may also want to add collating and binding as well, which you can get done at Staples I think or a company like Staples.
Then get some business cards made up, they just need to say your name and what you do. If your business laws are like Canadian laws you won’t need to register the business if you just use your real name, so long as you make under 000 per year. The difference is you’ll need to pay your income taxes because you won’t have an employer deducting it for you.
Then maybe make up a resume or something, stating how much experience you have in typing, and how fast you can type and so forth, along with something else stating your services and their costs.
Then I suggest going to law firms and other businesses that will need a lot of stuff typed that’d dictated and offer your services there. City services would be good for this too.
Some places nowadays use services like yours from overseas, they outsource it to places like India. You may be able to become successful because of this move to decentralize services.
So yeah, you shouldn’t have to register a business, you should have uncomplicated flat fees, whatever you think is reasonable, my examples were just random examples, but keep it super-simple. And then go for businesses that may be looking to outsource dictation services, they’re your best bet for success.
Answer by keisha h
I don’t think that a permit is necessary at the present time. I would suggest that you advertise your services in in order to get your name out there. If I were you, I would probably charge a little more than .05 per word. You have a great idea going and I wish you the best of luck!

Question by GiGi: I have vonage phone. I want to purchase a fax machine. What type fax will work over the internet?
Answer:
Answer by mrtazmania2
any fax machine will do. The way a fax machine works is basically the same way your phone works, it dials a number using tones, then when connected (somebody answers) it starts communicating (“talking”) to the fax machine on the other end by sending a series of tones, these tones tell the other fax machine “hey hows it going, I have to give you something, ready? okay start writing.”
The only thing you may need to be concerned about is if you have the right connection to send faxes, some ip phones will “back-feed” the other phone outlets in the house and therefore when sending a fax it’ll need to be hooked up directly to the modem to send and your other phones will be disabled while doing that, others will merely be an “access” point where all the phone-lines run through it and then you’d just need to plug in the fax and away you go.
Check with Vonage to see if you need to do anything “special” to the modem to allow data transfer from a fax to go through, usually you don’t.

Answer by G. Whilikers
It doesn’t matter. If your VOIP adapter offers an RJ11 jack your fax machine won’t know the difference.
Answer by Mr. VoIP
I suspect what you really mean to imply is Simplex (serial ?) vs. Duplex (parallel ?). Simplex means you have to take turns between sending and receiving voice or data. While Duplex means you can send and receive voice/data simultaneously (parallel).
Cable Digital Phone service is, in essence, really the same thing as VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol). Depending on the Digital Phone adapter box they give you, it presumably should be able to handle duplex operations.
It sounds like you want multiple phone lines on your service. One dedicated to incoming Fax, and one for dedicated outgoing Fax (so that you can receive incoming faxes while simultaneously sending faxes on another line?).
In the PSTN landline telephone world, that would require two separate phone lines, which would be parallel operation.
In the Digital Phone and VoIP world, you can have multiple phone lines on a single service line (duplex, or simulated parallel).
So, technically speaking, you should be able to have multiple phone lines on your single cable service line. But, you will need to speak to your Cable Co. to confirm what their service options really are and if the Digital Phone box will have multiple phone line jacks.
Answer by ►BobB◄
it is a serial connection. A serial connection is one bit at a time down the same connection.
A parallel connection is more than one bit at a time down separate connections.
